Daniela first noticed the door because of the light.
Every evening, when she came home from work, the sun reached through the small window at the top of the stairwell and landed on the old metal handle. Most people passed it without looking. The building had four floors, no elevator, and plenty of ordinary problems without worrying about a locked door above the apartments.
But Daniela had lived there for three months, and curiosity was one of the few things she never tried to ignore.
The door was painted dark green, though the color had faded near the handle. A small sign hung crookedly from one screw.
TERRAÇO
A terrace.
Above them.
In the middle of Porto.
One Thursday in June, Daniela stopped in front of the door and tried the handle. It did not move. She expected that, but still felt disappointed.
From the stairs below, someone called, “Are you trying to escape?”
Daniela turned and saw Bruno coming up with a paper bag in one arm and a loaf of bread sticking out of the top. He lived on the second floor and always seemed to be carrying food.
“I’m trying to see the rooftop,” Daniela said.
Bruno looked at the door as if he had never noticed it before. “There is a rooftop?”
“There is a sign.”
“A sign is not always a promise.”
Daniela smiled. “Maybe not. But it could be.”
Bruno stepped beside her and studied the lock. “The landlord probably has the key.”
“Do you think he will give it to us?”
“If we ask nicely,” Bruno said. “Or if we tell him we are saving the building from tragedy.”
“What tragedy?”
“The tragedy of a wasted view.”
The next afternoon, Bruno knocked on Daniela’s door with a key in his hand and a proud expression on his face. The landlord had agreed, but only after Bruno promised there would be no grill, no loud parties, and absolutely nothing thrown into the street.
“Very reasonable rules,” Daniela said.
“I thought so.”
