By the time the sky over Mexico City had begun to turn from charcoal to a dusty blue, Mercado de la Mañana was already awake. Metal shutters rattled upward one by one, crates scraped over concrete, and the first clouds of steam rose from Teresa’s griddle as if the market itself were exhaling after a short and restless sleep. Men in aprons crossed the aisles with stacks of plastic tubs balanced against their hips, someone shouted for change before most people had even set out their prices, and from the back corridor came the unmistakable sound of an argument that had probably started yesterday and simply paused for the night.
Javier arrived carrying a box of mangoes with the offended expression of a man who had already been inconvenienced too many times before sunrise. He set it down beside his stall and looked toward the narrow entrance where deliveries usually squeezed through. There was no sign of Juan Carlos, which was not yet a disaster, but was moving steadily in that direction. He began arranging papayas in a neat row, then changed his mind and moved them closer to the front, where their color would catch the first real light of morning. He had just stepped back to judge the effect when Teresa called across the aisle without looking up from her coffee urn.
“He’s late again.”
Javier spread his hands. “I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t have to. Your face said it.”
“My face is innocent.”
Teresa glanced at him then, unimpressed, while she folded napkins beside a tray of sweet bread. “Your face has never been innocent.”
That, Javier thought, was the kind of thing Teresa liked to say before six in the morning, when she had already tied on her apron, started the coffee, and given herself permission to speak to the rest of the market as if she were the only competent person in it.
