By the time Owen arrived at the language house in Málaga, the front door was already open, a suitcase was blocking half the entrance, and someone upstairs was dragging furniture across the floor with the kind of determination that suggested either deep confidence or complete confusion. He stopped on the threshold with his backpack over one shoulder and his phone in his hand, checking the address for the third time even though the blue-painted house, the narrow balcony with two potted plants, and the crooked ceramic number by the door all matched the photos he had studied before leaving the airport. Everything was correct. That, unfortunately, did not make it feel organized.
He stepped inside and found a hallway full of evidence that several people had arrived before him and had all responded differently. One pair of shoes had been lined up neatly against the wall. Another pair had been abandoned in the middle of the floor as if removed during a small emergency. Two suitcases stood upright near the stairs, and a third lay open beneath a framed poster of old Málaga, with clothes spilling out in stripes and denim. From somewhere in the back of the house came the clatter of dishes, followed by a woman’s voice saying something quickly in Spanish and a man’s voice replying with cheerful confidence that sounded, even to Owen, deeply unearned.
He set his own suitcase near the stairs and took two careful steps forward. “Hello?”
The woman appeared first. She came out of the kitchen carrying a roll of paper towels under one arm and a small set of keys in her hand, and she looked at him with the calm expression of someone who had already accepted that the day was not going to unfold in a reasonable order. She was about his age, maybe a little younger, with dark hair tied back loosely and the kind of face that seemed serious until the corners of her mouth moved. “You must be Owen,” she said in English. “Good. One person here knows where he is.”
