Episode 1 – The Dish of Debate / Episodio 1: El plato en debate

The morning opened the windows of Caserío María with a salty breeze that came from the bay, and the air carried with it the echo of waves breaking against the rocks and the aroma of roasted peppers waiting on a tray in the kitchen.
La mañana abrió las ventanas del Caserío María con una brisa salada que venía de la bahía, y el aire traía consigo el eco de las olas rompiendo contra las piedras y el aroma de los pimientos asados que esperaban en una bandeja de la cocina.

María, with her paprika-stained apron, sharpened the knife with solemn calm, as if each movement were a ritual meant to protect the memory of the house.
María, con el delantal manchado de pimentón, afilaba el cuchillo con calma solemne, como si cada movimiento fuera un ritual destinado a proteger la memoria de la casa.

“Today we return to the usual Gilda,” she announced without lifting her gaze. “Pepper, olive, anchovy… and silence.”
—Hoy volvemos a la Gilda de siempre —anunció sin levantar la mirada—. Guindilla, aceituna, anchoa… y silencio.

Isabel entered carrying a box with green lemons and small jars of infused oil, and her eyes sparkled as if they already saw a new map drawn across the table.
Isabel entró cargando una caja con limones verdes y pequeños frascos de aceite infusionado, y sus ojos brillaban como si ya vieran un mapa nuevo dibujado sobre la mesa.

“The Gilda can remain the queen,” she replied, “but even queens reinvent themselves. Imagine her with a touch of lemon zest, a marinated gordal olive, a thread of smoked oil… something that surprises without betraying.”
—La Gilda puede seguir siendo la reina —respondió—, pero incluso las reinas se reinventan. Imagínala con un toque de ralladura de limón, una aceituna gordal marinada, un hilo de aceite ahumado… algo que sorprenda sin traicionar.

María’s knife stopped a centimeter from the onion she was about to chop, and the silence in the kitchen grew so heavy that even the pans seemed to hold their breath.
El cuchillo de María se detuvo a un centímetro de la cebolla que iba a picar, y el silencio en la cocina se volvió tan pesado que hasta las sartenes parecieron contener la respiración.

“You don’t disguise the queen,” she said slowly. “You honor the queen.”
—A la reina no se la disfraza —dijo despacio—. A la reina se la honra.

Javier, already wearing his host’s jacket and the smile he had practiced for years, appeared with two glasses of wine in his hand.
Javier, con la chaquetilla de anfitrión ya puesta y la sonrisa que había practicado durante años, apareció con dos copas de vino en la mano.

“One for peace and another for creativity,” he toasted. “If you’re going to argue, let it be with toasts and not with knives in your hands.”
—Una para la paz y otra para la creatividad —brindó—. Si van a discutir, que sea brindando y no con cuchillos en la mano.

Diego came in behind him with a tray of steaming croquettes and a mischievous expression.
Diego entró detrás de él con una bandeja de croquetas humeantes y un gesto travieso.

“I vote for whatever they let me taste first,” he announced, before disappearing toward the tables as if the dining room were a stage.
—Yo voto por lo que me dejen probar primero —anunció, antes de desaparecer hacia las mesas como si el comedor fuera un escenario.

From her corner by the window, Lola adjusted the shawl over her shoulders and dropped the phrase like someone laying a tablecloth on the table.
Desde su rincón junto a la ventana, Lola se acomodó el chal sobre los hombros y dejó caer la frase como quien pone un mantel sobre la mesa.

“In my time, the Gilda was made with the hand and memory. If we start measuring the olives with rulers, even the anchovy will end up offended.”
—En mis tiempos, la Gilda se hacía con la mano y la memoria. Si empezamos a medir las aceitunas con reglas, hasta la anchoa se nos va a sentir ofendida.
