Historia 1 – La idea – Story 1 – The Idea

The night was slowly falling over Valencia, and the streetlights illuminated the orange-colored facades of the Ruzafa neighborhood.

Inside a small café still open at that hour, four friends sat at a table in the back, surrounded by the murmur of conversations and the clinking of spoons against cups.

Teresa rested her elbows on the table and played with a folded napkin, her gaze fixed on the steam rising from her café con leche.

Diego looked over a notebook full of numbers, as if he couldn’t disconnect from his habit of organizing everything.

Carolina talked nonstop, recounting an anecdote from the market that morning, while Andrés carefully observed the café’s espresso machine, as if evaluating every move the barista made.

“One day I’m going to learn to make an espresso better than that,” murmured Andrés, leaning forward. “Did you see how he let it run too long? That’s a crime against coffee.”

Carolina burst out laughing. “You say the same thing in every café we visit. Why don’t you just open your own and be done with it?”

The phrase fell on the table like a spark. Teresa lifted her gaze, Diego stopped writing, and even Andrés went silent for a moment.

“Our own café?” asked Teresa, almost in a whisper. Her eyes shone with a mix of curiosity and fear.

“Yes, why not?” replied Carolina with a wide smile. “Imagine a place where people feel welcome, where the coffee actually tastes good, and where there are no grumpy waiters.”
